Elon Musk Announces Move of SpaceX and X Headquarters from California to Texas

Billionaire Elon Musk revealed plans to relocate the headquarters of both SpaceX and social media company X from California to Texas. Musk announced via X on Tuesday that SpaceX will move from Hawthorne, California, to its rocket launch site, Starbase, in Texas. Additionally, X will transition from San Francisco to Austin.

Musk cited a new California law signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which prohibits school districts from requiring staff to notify parents of a child’s gender identification change, as the “final straw” prompting the move. He mentioned that he had previously warned Governor Newsom that such laws would drive families and companies away from California to safeguard their children.

Tesla, another Musk-led company, moved its corporate headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin, Texas, in 2021. Musk has also relocated his personal residence to Texas, which does not impose a state personal income tax.

SpaceX’s Starship rockets are built and launched from Boca Chica Beach, Texas, near the Mexican border, at a site called Starbase. The company’s smaller Falcon 9 rockets launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and Southern California. Starbase is situated just below South Padre Island, approximately 20 miles from Brownsville.
