Simmons was found unresponsive Saturday at his Hollywood Hills home, one day after his 76th birthday, two law enforcement sources said.

Richard Simmons, the beloved fitness icon known for his exuberant personality and “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” workout videos, has passed away at the age of 76. Two law enforcement sources confirmed his death to NBC News. Simmons was found unresponsive at his Hollywood Hills home on Saturday, just one day after celebrating his birthday. The exact cause of his death is pending.

The day before his passing, Simmons shared a heartfelt message on social media, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of birthday wishes. “Thank you…I never got so many messages about my birthday in my life!” he wrote. “I am sitting here writing emails. Have a most beautiful rest of your Friday. Love, Richard.”

Simmons’ rise to fame began in the 1970s and 1980s, with his unique and engaging approach to fitness that inspired millions. His website describes him as “one of the world’s most revered and iconic fitness personalities,” who helped countless people adopt healthier lifestyles through his energetic and motivating programs.

Born in New Orleans, Simmons struggled with weight issues during his youth but transformed his life through moderate eating and exercise. Moving to Los Angeles in 1973, he opened his gym, SLIMMONS, in 1974, where he continued to teach classes and host seminars until 2013.

Simmons’ contributions to fitness extended beyond his gym. He starred in “The Richard Simmons Show,” which ran for four years and won multiple Emmy awards. Throughout his career, he released 65 fitness videos, sold over 20 million copies, and authored nine books and three cookbooks.

Despite retreating from the public eye in 2014, Simmons remained active on social media, often sharing motivational messages and personal stories. Earlier this year, he addressed an unauthorized biopic about his life, clarifying he had not given permission for its production and expressing his desire for a peaceful life.

His recent social media activity included a poignant message about living life to the fullest, which was followed by the revelation of a skin cancer diagnosis. However, it is unclear if this diagnosis was related to his death.

Richard Simmons leaves behind a legacy of joy, motivation, and inspiration that will continue to influence the fitness world and beyond.
